The former president of a defunct nationwide work-at-home-scheme called Club Freedom has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for conspiracy to commit mail fraud. Neil Telafor, 57, of Kresgeville, Monroe County, was sentenced yesterday by U.S. Middle District Senior Judge Malcolm Muir, who also imposed a three-year term of supervised release. For now, Telafor is responsible for $143,604 in restitution because his co-defendant, Dayton Sauerman, formerly of State College, is believed to be in China with his wife, a native of that country.

Increased working from home could save the US contact center industry up to $10 per employee per hour(1), along with environmental and human resource benefits, according to a new report from Exony that details the far-reaching cost savings and other benefits of homeshoring. ‘Homeshoring’ occurs when contact centers equip staff with appropriate communications facilities to be able to work from home rather than one central office. Currently, there are an estimated 112,000 home-based agents in the US, a figure that is predicted to rise to 330,000 by 2010 (source: IDC).

“The price of gasoline may finally be changing the way many people commute and communicate. Anecdotal evidence says teleworkers are growing rapidly as a direct result of the cost of driving. The average homeworker spends almost seven hours a day working, with 15% spending more than 10 hours a day in gainful employment, according to the poll of 3,000 people carried out by Cornhill Direct. The State of North Carolina on Wednesday halted the operations of two companies that help set up online home businesses, citing alleged unfair and deceptive practices. StoresOnline and iMergent, Inc., both based in Orem, Utah, have agreed to stop doing business in the state until the case is resolved in court. The companies also agreed to issue full refunds to North Carolinians who file complaints with Attorney General Roy Cooper’s office. A complaint filed by Cooper says iMergent and StoresOnline misrepresented their Internet products and services, which included claims they would help customers sell products online that could generate thousands of dollars.
