Long Term Care Weighs On The Minds of Self Employed

Spending on long-term care, at roughly 10% of national health expenditures, is large and increasing. However, long-term care expenditures are difficult to measure because free care provided by family and friends is hard to gauge and value. More than half of the disabled elderly rely exclusively on informal, unpaid care. Given the uncertain and expensive nature of long-term care, simple economic theory suggests that risk-averse individuals should purchase long-term care insurance. Paradoxically, the private long-term care insurance market remains small: In 2002, only about 6 million people had private long-term care insurance. The City of Cambridge is participating in a new pilot project designed to reduce traffic on the roads and the harmful tailpipe emissions that go along with that. Last year, the city was approached about participating into a telecommuting pilot project called Telework, along with other cities in Waterloo Region and two private sector companies. The project also has federal government support, as a means of reducing car usage. The project is quite simple, according to Frank Gowman, city treasurer and commissioner of corporate services. “What we do is let people work from home on either a regular or part-time basis,” he explained. “What it does is formalizes something that we’ve done in an informal way for a number of years.” Participation in the program is voluntary, but it isn’t for everyone.

Discipline key to successful home business

Working from Home To run a successful work at home enterprise, you’ve got to be able to separate your work from your personal life. You’ve got to be able to set working hours so that when you work, you work, and when you’re not working you have quality personal time. You’ve got to make the decision to turn the computer off and not take e-mail. You’ve got to be able to say, “This is a job, it’s just a coincidence that it’s in my home, and so I’m going to work 8 to 5.” But also you can time shift. You can say, “I’m an early morning person who has to pick my kids up at 3 o’clock from school.” So you can work 5 till 7, get up and take the kids to school, come back and work till 3 and go get your kids and come back. You don’t have to work a full shift like a regular 8 to 5 kind of thing. But whatever you’re doing, you have to have regular hours, and you have to have the discipline to stick to those hours, otherwise you wind up not really getting a lot accomplished.
