Some city hall staff may soon be joining some of their private sector counterparts who are working from home instead of the office. The City of Cambridge is participating in a new pilot project designed to reduce traffic on the roads and the harmful tailpipe emissions that go along with that. Last year, the city was approached about participating into a telecommuting pilot project called Telework, along with other cities in Waterloo Region and two private sector companies. The project also has federal government support, as a means of reducing car usage. The project is quite simple, according to Frank Gowman, city treasurer and commissioner of corporate services. “What we do is let people work from home on either a regular or part-time basis,” he explained. “What it does is formalizes something that we’ve done in an informal way for a number of years.” Participation in the program is voluntary, but it isn’t for everyone. |
