TriHealth Makes Working Mother’s “Best List”

A local health care system was the only Tri-State-based company to make Working Mother magazine’s “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers” list this year. TriHealth Inc. made the list for several family-friendly initiatives, including an on-site day-care center that operates from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to the magazine’s Web site. Working Mother also praised TriHealth for its 12-week leave for all new parents; its flex-scheduling, including telecommuting and job-sharing; and a health benefits policy that covers employees who work 16 hours or more per week. The magazine also noted that 83 percent of TriHealth’s more than 8,400 employees are female, with more than 700 of that number in the top 20 percent on the pay scale. TriHealth operates Bethesda North and Good Samaritan hospitals, as well as community-based facilities and home health services. An Organizational Guide to Telecommuting

First National Bank of Omaha Gains National Recognition For Innovative Employment Practices

What Got You Here Won\'t Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful Congratulations to First National Bank. This Omaha company is once again at the top of the list for providing a great place for mothers who do it all. For the sixth year in a row, Working Mother magazine named First National Bank “Best Company for Working Mothers.” One reason it won was because it’s close to work and the teachers work close with the kids. “She is so close, I can walk over and see her anytime I want. The teachers call anytime, you can call them, you can pop over anytime, so it’s a very open door policy,” says working mom, Kelly Parr. Aside from the daycare, First National Bank was also recognized for it’s flexibility with job sharing and telecommuting. Each year Working Mother magazine narrows the best companies down to the top 100.

The Work At Home Business

Have you considered quitting the “rat race” and working at home?

Here are a few concepts to ponder before making the plunge.

1. It’s probably not a good idea to work from home attired in your pajamas. Yes, it’s mildly touted by some that “yes, I can wake up and go to work”; but, you really do need to establish a routine, a work schedule that mimics actions of real-world workers. Doing so will make you a more consistent earner, not just a “piddler”.

2. It’s better to have a separate office area in which to work. The proper environment will put you in the frame of mind to be more productive and actually help to insure long-term success in whatever venture you choose to pursue. Your own, designated office space will also help to keep interruptions to a minimum.

3. Announce to friends and family that even though you are now working from home, this is your livelihood. Operating your “at home” business involves handling sales, production, orders, billing customers and other matters of commerce necessary to keep a business operating. The entire compliment of people that do the work will most likely be you and it will not take long to realize just how many hours are required to get everything done. Those around you need to be aware of your need for privacy.

The Financial Plan

“Experts” agree that the first step in long-term, financial success is a viable, clearly delineated plan. The actual plan is a list of your financial goals, a reasonable estimate of what they will cost and a calculation of how you are going to pay for them. The heart of the plan is a list of what you currently own in terms of investments and what kinds of investments (and returns) you will need to achieve your goals. If you don’t have a plan, your chance of success is much less as you lack direction, changing course on the advice of others.

Working The World From Home

Since selling its first ticket in 1999, JetBlue has never operated a traditional reservations center. All 1,200 agents still work in residences around Salt Lake City, Neeleman’s home town. Rothstein, 55 and a grandmother of two, was happy working at Continental’s reservations center at Tampa International Airport while she lived a 15-minute drive away in Town ‘N Country. But when her husband sold his telecom equipment business and they moved 30 miles north to Meadow Pointe, the commute became a nightmare. She’d leave at 7, then at 6:30 in the morning, to miss rush hour and make work by 9. Her shift ended at 5 p.m, as cars clogged Interstate 275 for the trip home. “I’d leave in the dark and come home in the dark,” she says. Rothstein was the first to sign up when Continental asked for volunteers to do the job from home. She already had an office with a PC and broadband service. Continental required a second phone line to connect to the reservations data system. How to Win Friends & Influence People

Commute Time Makes Telecommuting Attractive

An Organizational Guide to Telecommuting Long drive times, gasoline costs and a mass transit system that were never designed for suburban businesses and their employees make telecommuting an intriguing idea. Yet relatively few businesses seem to have bought into the concept. Among the pros and cons should be considered are company processes; whether there is sufficient IT support to allow off-site work; whether the company culture can adapt to a telecommuting lifestyle; whether employees are suited to the process; and the company’s ability to help employees set up a home office. Obviously, some job descriptions lend themselves more readily to telecommuting than others. IT development can be done anywhere, the office, the bedroom. Manufacturing operations, on the other hand, can only be done in the factory.
