It’s a new phenomenon. “Helicopter” baby-boomer parents hovering around firms’ human relations offices, quick to sing the praises of their kids or complain if they don’t get a good performance review. When boomers’ children were very young, primary and secondary school was where they hovered. Now they’ve switched to the university and the workplace. One thing boomers learned as they populated the workplace was how tough it could be to get ahead. Their generation grew up questioning authority, but found out pretty quickly that the people who employed them wanted none of that and, given the population bulge, could replace them easily if they rocked the boat. |
