Telecommuting And Work From Home For Federal Employees

101 Tips for Telecommuters

Over the years, as technology has progressed, managers have learned that tracking employees’ work can be easier than just watching to make sure they get back from lunch on time. Each year, the good idea that nobody really believed in has hung in there. The Office of Personnel Management has been pushing telecommuting for several years now. And Congress is also getting into the act. Recently, both the Senate and the House have introduced bills that encourage federal agencies to allow eligible employees to telecommute four days a month on the average. Congress, OPM and telecommuter wannabees are hoping to expand those numbers dramatically. A task force is looking at how to do that. A report, “Telework: Breaking New Ground” was issued by OPM on Nov. 6 and can be accessed on OPM’s Web site. Read more »

Information Technology And Telecommuting

Working from Home

How favorably do IT managers look on stay-at-home workers, both those who toil in IT, and the rest of the company? Citrix Online, a division of thin-client software vendor Citrix Systems that offers Web-based remote-computing services, released the results of a recent survey that said almost a quarter of workers in the United States are telecommuters, and of those who aren’t, almost two thirds wish they were. Twenty-three percent (23%) of American workers (and 41% of small business owners) regularly work from home or another off-site location, relying on Web technology (e.g., the Internet, e-mail, or programs that allow them to remotely access their office computers or meet with colleagues online). Of those who currently do not have the ability to do their jobs off site, 62% agreed they would like to be able to do so. Read more »

Newest Version Of Microsoft Office Accounting Optimized For Home-Based Accounting

Office 2007 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))

Microsoft’s Office Accounting 2008 has been made better for neophytes than its predecessor. Getting started with the accounting application is easier, especially if you currently use an Excel spreadsheet to track your business finances. New business templates are available to set up accounts for particular types of businesses, from retail to construction. Office Accounting Express 2008, a basic version of the application aimed at new and home-based businesses, is a free download from Microsoft’s Ideawins. Express can track income and expenses, but it doesn’t manage inventory, so it isn’t suitable for businesses that sell products. This free version displays advertisements. Read more »

Raw Story, one of the nation’s leading political and investigative news websites, is seeking a full time Deputy Managing Editor to edit the site on evenings and Sundays. The successful candidate will be responsible for choosing the content that goes up on the site, writing up news articles, doing small reporting, and managing and recruiting site updaters and some freelancers.

The editor would work Monday through Thursday on an evening shift, likely 12:30 pm ? 8:30 pm PST and Sunday late morning- evening. Telecommuting A Win-Win For Both Employees and Employers

Managing Telework: Strategies for Managing the Virtual Workforce

According to a recent article on the American Psychological Association website, telecommuting has positive impacts on an individual’s mental health and happiness. Telecommuting is a win-win for employees and employers, resulting in higher morale and job satisfaction and lower employee stress and turnover. These were among the conclusions of psychologists who examined 20 years of research on flexible work arrangements. The findings, based on a meta-analysis of 46 studies of telecommuting involving 12,833 employees, are reported in the current issue of the Journal of Applied Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association (APA). According to lead author Ravi S. Gajendran, ?Autonomy is a major factor in worker satisfaction and this rings true in our analysis. We found that telecommuters reported more job satisfaction, less motivation to leave the company, less stress, improved work-family balance, and higher performance ratings by supervisors.? The Realities Of Working From Home

The Virtual Office Survival Handbook: What Telecommuters and Entrepreneurs Need to Succeed in Today\'s Nontraditional Workplace

Work at your own pace, save a bundle on commuting and dry cleaning and have plenty of time with the kids. What’s not to like? The reality is a bit more complicated. In the early stages of the new routine, you may find that your boss is managing you more closely than before. Sounds counterintuitive, but working from home is still pretty new in many parts of the country, and a boss who agrees to experiment with such an arrangement is probably being closely scrutinized by his boss. You may make a quick run to the store in the middle of the day, only to discover an irritated voice mail from your boss when you return. The key to making telecommuting work for you and your company is understanding and managing expectations. Have a clear agreement about what your supervisor wants and what you’re willing to do. You may be expected to be at your desk at home during normal business hours, just as if you were at the office. Read more »

Web Content Writers- Contract, part-time

We’re looking for web content writers to write part-time on a contractual basis. Visit our website to see examples of what we’re looking for. We don’t care what a new HDTV costs, anyone can find that anywhere on the web, but try finding the cost of something like- “What does it cost to have a 75 foot tree removed from my backyard?” You won’t find that under a Google search! You’d have to call companies in your area and get quotes, many times from high pressure salespeople. This is what most people end up doing after a frustrating time on the web looking for BALLPARK estimates for what it will cost.

In addition, we have categories relating to adventure travel or topics that you don’t normally don’t come across on the web, such as “What it costs to take a submersible to see the Titanic” or “What it costs to become a Ninja”

The qualities in contract writers we’re most interested in are creative writing, humor, and the ability to research a cost-topic and organize
your research in a readable format.

Send a writing sample or a paragraph about why you’d be good at this to:

admin@whatitcosts.com

unlike a lot of Web companies that offer a percentage of (non-existent)
ad revenue, we pay per content piece. If you sound like a
a good candidate to us, we’ll send you a topic. We pay $50 per topic
for the first 10 articles we accept, increasing to $100 per topic when
we accept over 20 articles from you.

Worst case scenario- we select you as a potential writer, we send you
a topic, you write 1-2 pages of content after researching it, we DON’T
like it, we send you a thank you note and a check for $50.

Best case scenario- we select you as a potential writer, we send you a topic,
you write 1-2 pages of content after researching it, we DO like it,
we send you a check for $50 and a new topic to write, repeat (on an
increasing sliding pay scale we’ll detail to you with your contract,
up to $100 per article after 20th article is accepted)

* Location: online
* Compensation: $50-$100 per content piece
* Telecommuting is ok.
* This is a part-time job.
* This is a contract job.

Baby Boomers Increasingly Provide Care For Living Parent

Mommy Millionaire: How I Turned My Kitchen Table Idea into a Million Dollars and How You Can, Too!

Newday chronicles a USA Today/ABC News/Gallup Poll earlier this year finding that 41 percent of baby boomers with a living parent are using their money, time or both to take care of them. And since most of these caregivers are at the leading edge of that famous cohort, it is just the beginning of an inevitable social – and personal – struggle. “They’re part of that ‘Me GenerationMe Generation,’” said M. Joann Wright, PhD, a boomer herself, and director of clinical training at the Family Counseling Center of Trinity Services in Joliet, Ill. “When they were raising their own kids, they were kind of resentful, the children being in the way of their partying. Now they’re experiencing the same thing again, with their parents. This is a group very much unlike the generation that came before us.” Read more »
