Potential of Teleworking Catching On

Working from Home

Working from home and telecommuting saves time and money. It also boosts productivity, eases traffic congestion, and conserves energy. Now, years after technology made a reality of the home office, corporate America is finally awakening to the benefits of employees working at home. Statistics show a significant increase the last two years in companies that have embraced, or are seriously considering teleworking. The U.S. government is recently agreed to consider telecommuting for federal workers, responding to recent congressional demands that it not just allow but encourage employees to perform some of their duties from home. Last year, 12.4 million Americans worked from home at least one day per month, a 25 percent increase over the year before and a 63 percent increase over 2004, according to a recent report from WorldatWork, an employment think tank. By 2010, WorldatWork estimates that 100 million Americans will do at least some work at home. Read more »

How Telecommuting Lessens Stress And Boosts Employee Morale

The Distance Manager: A Hands On Guide to Managing Off-Site Employees and Virtual Teams

Through extensive research and real-life experiences, companies are finding that telecommuting is a huge incentive for workers and employers, boosting morale and job satisfaction. Telecommuters indicate that the employment situation cuts stress and also results in increased productivity. In an analysis of 46 studies on telecommuting, researchers found that working away from the office by using computers, cell phones or other electronic equipment can have more pluses than negatives for people and the companies that employ them. “Our results show that telecommuting has an overall beneficial effect because the arrangement provides employees with more control over how they do their work,” said Dr Ravi Gajendran of Pennsylvania State University. “Telecommuting seems to have some mildly positive effects on employee morale, on work-family balance and on stress,” he added in an interview. Work at Home Schemes And Scams

Business Opportunity and Work-at-home Scams

“Work at Home” ads are everywhere in print and online. If you’ve been tempted to answer one, you’ll want to do plenty of research before signing up or more importantly paying up. Jessica Tharp of Better Business Bureau says, “The BBB gets several calls on work at home schemes, everyday, all over the United States, this is a problem.” If you fell for one of these scams, you’re not alone not by a long shot. Tharp says, “Consumers are looking for easy money, and they think here’s an opportunity for me, can I take advantage of it, and unfortunately there are no legitimate work at home schemes. Basically if its too good to be true, it is.” These ads can be found on many job search websites. Sites and newspapers do their best to police the scams but can’t catch all of them. Right now, the BBB is investigating a company operating under the name Worldwide and Toy Union. Read more »

Congressional Committees Approving Expanded Telecommuting

An Organizational Guide to Telecommuting

Congressional committees worked together this week to approve a bill that would make it possible for more federal employees to become telecommuters. The Senate committee acted a week after supporters of a work from home initiative introduced similar legislation in the House. The bills would encourage federal agencies to allow eligible employees to telecommute four days a month, on average. The chief sponsors in the Senate, Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Mary Landrieu (D-La.), said that expanded telecommuting in the government would get cars off the road, reducing energy costs and cutting pollution. About 6.6 percent of federal employees are regular telecommuters, according to data collected in 2005. Under the bill, the determination of who may telecommute would be left to agencies, which would have to tell employees whether they were eligible to work at home or at a remote site. Read more »

Maine’s Governor Announces New Energy Programs To Include Telecommuting Initiative

Governor John Baldacci is leaning on Maine’s congressional delegation to secure additional funds for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. And on the state level, Maine State Housing, which administers LIHEAP, has negotiated deals to make the money go further, even as the Public Utilities Commission has donated $400,000 to help with weatherization and efficiency programs. And if there’s an oil shortage, or if prices become out of reach, the governor said he’s prepared to call on a new task force that will make sure Mainers are protected with shelters and other services. It’s Good News For Us Work At Home Moms

Back on the Career Track: A Guide for Stay-at-Home Moms Who Want to Return to Work

According to this WSJ article, a growing number of employers, from UnitedHealth Group and Safeco to Capgemini, IBM, American Express and Sun Microsystems, are hiring skilled new employees to telecommute right from the start. These aren’t the piecework, independent-contractor gigs or commission-only sales jobs that have characterized at-home “employment” in the past. They are full-time corporate jobs with benefits, available without the prerequisite of working for the company for a few years first. The nascent trend is remarkable for the breadth of industries it encompasses, from financial services to health care, and for what it heralds for the future. The factors driving it — the unmet need for skilled workers, improvements in mobile-office technology and a drive to cut real-estate costs — are solid. All this suggests a new hole has opened in the dam of employer resistance to telecommuting.
