No Rush to “Fix” Social Security

Nanny State: How Food Fascists, Teetotaling Do-Gooders, Priggish Moralists, and other Boneheaded Bureaucrats are Turning America into a Nation of Children

The misunderstanding of America’s largest and most successful anti-poverty program persists. This was evident on Sunday’s Meet the Press with Tim Russert, which was devoted to an interview with Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama. Obama is no enemy of Social Security. But like most of the country, he is misinformed on this issue. So he is going after his opponent, Hillary Clinton, for saying “if we just get our fiscal house in order that we can solve the problem of Social Security.” Obama told Russert: “Now, we’ve got 78 million baby boomers that are going to be retiring, and every expert that looks at this problem says ‘There’s going to be a gap, and we’re going to have more money going out than we have coming in unless we make some adjustments now.’” Read more »

Call Centers Trending Towards Telecommuting And Work From Home Moms

The Distance Manager: A Hands On Guide to Managing Off-Site Employees and Virtual Teams

Call centers must begin changing the way they do business. Flexible hours and telecommuting are beginning to take hold at several companies, but few call center employees currently enjoy that perk. Comcast has a pilot program in place that allows some high-performing call center employees to work from home, and Advance/Newhouse Communications’ Bright House Networks also has some telecommuting call center workers. About 250 employees at Cox Communications’ Alabama call center telecommute now. That number will expand to about 300 next year, said Mae Douglas, the operator’s chief people officer. Some cable companies are getting smarter about how they let their call center workers do their jobs. Bright House’s call centers are predominantly run by and staffed with women, said Jennifer Mooney, group vice president of public and government affairs. The company launched a telecommuting program for call center workers a year ago and the company is looking to expand it in the next year. Comcast is currently piloting a telecommuting program in one of its divisions, according to senior vice president of human resources Charisse Lillie. Read more »

Drawbacks To Working From Home

Mommy Millionaire: How I Turned My Kitchen Table Idea into a Million Dollars and How You Can, Too! When people who work geographically apart need to meet, much can be lost in the translation. The inability to read body language or follow what’s being sketched out on a whiteboard can result in misunderstandings and lost productivity. According to Jack Penkoske, director for manpower, personnel and security at the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), staff had to be trained to know when they should be on-site for meetings and when phone conferencing would work. “If it’s a standard type of meeting — where it’s a status report thing, where you’re updating on things — they’re very conducive to that e-collaboration type of setup,” says Penkoske. “If it’s a strategy discussion or you’re getting into a lot more dialogue on issues and concerns and brainstorming, sometimes you find you go back to wanting to have face-to-face meetings for those.”

Obama Wants More Help for Families Including Telecommuting Incentives

Barack Obama, a Democratic presidential contender, said his proposals would expand the federal Family and Medical Leave Act, encourage states to develop programs for paid time off and would double funding for after-school programs. They also would expand the Child and Development Care Tax Credit to help families afford child care expenses. Obama said he would institute a program that would help businesses create flexible work opportunities, and would increase federal incentives for telecommuting.
