Employers have struggled with holiday staffing since our country moved away from agrarian society to an information-based economy. Modern-day managers may wish they could grant every request for time off during Christmas and New Year’s. Unfortunately, meeting business needs raises the topic of which employees pull the unpopular shifts.

Organizations deal with vacation issues in different ways. Depending on the industry, the period of Christmas through the New Year holidays could be either a borderline slow period or it can be just an insanely busy period. Fifty-nine percent of employers offer days off on a first-come, first-served basis, according to a recent survey by the Society for Human Resource Management. Forty-three percent rotate time to ensure fairness.

When businesses can allow flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting, they may find people get their work done despite holiday time off. Many companies ask for volunteers, offering cash or additional time off when there’s a shortage of those willing to work during the two weeks surrounding the Christmas / New Years vacation period. This holiday season may be the perfect time for more companies to implement a telecommute policy.
