Making Working From Home Work For You

How to Start a Home-Based Gift Basket Business, Fourth Edition

CNN.com is featuring an article, penned by Adrienne Muralidharan, that discusses the pros and cons of working from home.

The article begins with a discussion about how some of our friends and acquaintances might consider our work at home enterprise as a “trivial” pursuit. That is, just because some of choose to work from home, our efforts are just not as intense, as productive as those that work a nine-to-five, office bound job.

Using herself as an example, Ms. Muralidharan writes that, as a freelance journalist working from home, she has had to have “talks” with her friends and former co-workers, just to explain the in-home routines that she has had to adopt.

All in all, a nicely done article. Definitely worth a read.

Website Troubleshooter Needed

Hi

We are a small non-profit environmental organization which has a broken website. We need someone with lots of experience who can fix the website quickly and for a reasonable price. Our website currently runs on unsupported proprietary software and it needs to be taken out of that and put into something we can actually use to update our website. We would like a short-term fix until we build a new website in 2008. Please be dependable, experienced in fixing websites and professional. When you reply please be prepared to provide 2-3 URL’s of websites (not your own!) you have fixed. This project needs to be completed by mid February at the latest. The last person I hired to do this project flaked out and set us back 3 months so it is necessary that you meet my requirements.

Since I expect to get many responses I will respond only to the top 3 candidates. I apologize to the rest in advance. I will want to have a brief meeting and check references.

Thank you and happy new year!

* Compensation: TBA
* Telecommuting is ok.
* This is a contract job.
* This is at a non-profit organization.

Fraudulent Work From Home Schemes

How to Start a Home Based Catering Business

On occasion, I have discussed the importance of performing “due diligence” in choosing to purchase, or even affiliate oneself with any work at home enterprise. The first step of any investigatory process is a review of the financial, legal, tax consequences, environment and marketplace effectiveness of the company that offers the work at home product or service.

You have an implied public liability in offering any product or service for sale. Even though you may only be a sales agent for the company represented, a “duty of care” is implied through any transaction you may make on their behalf. That is, if you, knowingly or not, offer a defective product or service that harms the public, you may be held legally liable and subject to criminal or civil litigation.

Those licensing work at home schemes are subject to increased scrutiny in today’s marketplace. A recent story about a Pennsylvania couple illustrates the point. This pair was sentenced to more than 22 months in prison after pleading guilty to concealment of a felony. They were sentenced to time served for bilking 77,000 people out of $3 million and ordered to pay more than $293,600 in restitution while awaiting sentencing.

The company charged a $31 “registration fee” and an additional $100 for a kit that contained enough material to make 60 cat magnets. A sample magnet also was available for $12. People who assembled the magnets and sent them to National Home Assemblers expecting payment instead received a letter rejecting the magnets as having been shipped past an artificial due date, or claiming the magnets did not meet inspection standards.

After receiving complaints, U.S. postal inspectors searched the business and found buildings filled with returned magnets. Victims’ losses ranged from $12 to $2,000. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has received nearly 3,000 requests for restitution. The pair pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Home-Based Businesses Offer Significant Tech-Purchasing Power

Home-Based Business For Dummies (For Dummies (Business & Personal Finance))

This perception of home based businesses has been quickly changing as the work at home movement has spread into more-and-more industries. As the U.S. economy is facing a possible recession, the silver lining for tech vendors may come from the purchasing power of U.S. home-based businesses.

The home-based business is rapidly becoming a significant sector that vendors need to embrace. More people may look to operating a home-based business as a means to supplement their income or fulfill personal aspirations.

According to a recent study, the average U.S. home business owner is highly educated, with over 3 in 5 having at least a college undergraduate degree. These individuals tend to be in their late forties and have been in business for about seven years. More than four in ten mentioned that their work from home enterprise attributed to more than half of their total annual household income. Read more »

iPhone Misses Huge Business Market

iPhone: The Missing Manual

Most all of us work at home entrepreneurs use a cell home for our daily business applications. Many of us have undoubtedly considered using Apple’s iPhone and as a result we might be interested in learning more about this heavily advertised device.
Vunet.com
is showing an interesting article that discusses the iPhone for use in business and corporate environments.

According to the article, the iPhone does not appear to be an ideal device for either web-based applications or business email access, where the iPhone?s on-screen keyboard makes it unsuitable as a BlackBerry replacement. While phone calls and voicemail seem to be easy, and its web browser excels at displaying pages, the device only supports GPRS networks ? (with Edge where available) ? making browsing slow when out of range of a Wi-Fi access point.

The iPhone also relies on a ?soft? on-screen keyboard for input, and lacks the level of support for corporate email accounts found in many Windows Mobile or Symbian handsets. It is incompatible with the iNotes web-based access for Lotus Notes. Other applications such as IT Week?s content management system simply halted upon identifying it as an unsupported browser.

Holiday Staffing Is A Perfect Opportunity To Consider Telecommuting

Managing Teleworkers and Telecommuting Strategies

Employers have struggled with holiday staffing since our country moved away from agrarian society to an information-based economy. Modern-day managers may wish they could grant every request for time off during Christmas and New Year’s. Unfortunately, meeting business needs raises the topic of which employees pull the unpopular shifts.

Organizations deal with vacation issues in different ways. Depending on the industry, the period of Christmas through the New Year holidays could be either a borderline slow period or it can be just an insanely busy period. Fifty-nine percent of employers offer days off on a first-come, first-served basis, according to a recent survey by the Society for Human Resource Management. Forty-three percent rotate time to ensure fairness.

When businesses can allow flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting, they may find people get their work done despite holiday time off. Many companies ask for volunteers, offering cash or additional time off when there’s a shortage of those willing to work during the two weeks surrounding the Christmas / New Years vacation period. This holiday season may be the perfect time for more companies to implement a telecommute policy. Read more »

Work From Home Or Work At Home

What Got You Here Won\'t Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful

Yes, it’s a confusing title.

But, a recent article in pc world has got me to thinking about the plight of individuals who are asked (or required) by their employers to take their work home with them.

Those of us who have at one time worked in the corporate world understood that to get ahead we sometimes, emphasize sometimes, needed to extend our workday by “working at home”.

Now, technology is making it possible for employers to have the use of their workforce beyond the normal 9 to 5 workday.

Within Australian government, state-of-the-art Blackberries were purchased for the Minister for Environment, Water, Heritage and Arts as well as 40 other executives including senior departmental staff.

As a result, staff members have expressed fears about BlackBerries contributing to a longer working day and felt it was going a step too far because mobile phones are adequate for out-of-office contact. Not everyone agreed, however, with some senior executives claiming a BlackBerry can contribute to work/life balance by facilitating telecommuting and more flexible schedules.

What do you think?
