My Two Most Important Working From Home Tips

Secrets of Self-Employment (Working from Home)

Everyone with a work at home blog has published an article that lists a plethora of work at home tips. Heck, I have probably written a few articles of a similar nature in the two years of my “make-money-online” blogging enterprise. While this article won’t portend to be the end-all and be-all for work at home tips, maybe I can shed some light on just what makes a work at home entrepreneur successful.

My first tip is to be passionate about your subject matter. Professional marketers understand that to sell the product, you need to convey the feeling that you, too, are excited to use the same product that you are “pumping”, even if that product is merely “informational” in nature.

One of the best examples of a passionate website owner is our friend Aaron Wall who publishes the SEO Book. We read Aaron’s blog most everyday. His daily posts have given us many ideas on how we might make our blog better.

Another tip, and the one I find most easy to implement, is consistency. It seems that I am able to find some subject to blog about everyday. The universe of making money online is full of wonderful stories about successful enterprises and folks that implement them.

Stay tuned, there will be more tips to come. Oh yeah, consider subscribing to this site’s RSS feed by clicking here. Doing so will give you the tips when they occur.

Teleworking Coalition Speaks To Recent Findings

Managing Teleworkers and Telecommuting Strategies

According to a recent study, office workers that continue to endure the normal nine to five environment, those that continue to battle traffic congestion and road rage, have less job satisfaction that their telecommuting counterparts. They are also more willing to leave the company than their teleworking colleagues.

Now, a telecommuting coalition disputes the findings, saying poor procedures, policies and processes can doom such initiatives.

The Washington-based The Telework Coalition points to the results of a 2006 TelCoa survey of approximately 70,000 employees from 13 large government and private-sector organizations. That survey indicated that there was no resentment of teleworkers in the home office — if anything, their concerns were about ‘Why do others get to telework and not me?”. Read more »

Understanding The Illusive Home Office Deduction

Organizing from the Inside Out, second edition: The Foolproof System For Organizing Your Home, Your Office and Your Life

Expenses related to the rent, purchase, maintenance and repair of a personal residence may not be deducted as a business expense. However, taxpayers who use a portion of their home for business purposes may be able to take a home office deduction if they meet certain requirements.

Homeowners that maintain a home office, or work from home may deduct their expenses including the business portion of their real estate taxes, mortgage interest, rent, utilities, insurance, painting, repairs and depreciation. The amount of depreciation deducted decreases the basis of your property (see your accountant for an explanation of “basis”).

According to the IRS web site

In order to claim a deduction for that part of a home used for business, taxpayers must use that part of the home:

* Exclusively and regularly as their principal place of business, as a place to meet or deal with patients, clients or customers in the normal course of their business, or in connection with their trade or business where there is a separate structure not attached to the home; or

* On a regular basis for certain storage use such as inventory or product samples, as rental property, or as a home daycare facility.

Yet, according to the WSJ article titled “Fear of the Home-Office Deduction

Even as more Americans work at home, many of them appear to be missing out on valuable home-office tax deductions, an Internal Revenue Service official says.

That article mentions that

Years ago, Congress made changes that allowed more taxpayers to qualify for the home-office deduction. Under that law, your home office will qualify as your principal place of business if you use it exclusively and regularly for substantial administrative activities or management of your trade or business — and you have no other fixed place for your trade or business. Examples of these activities would be billing customers, clients or patients — or keeping books and records.

So, if you qualify for the deduction, by all means see what effect it has on your tax liability. With careful record keeping, using the deduction may trigger an IRS inquiry, not necessarily an audit. Most inquiries can be handled by responding to the IRS mailing.

Hilton Reservations Worldwide Allowing Employees To Work From Home

Opting Out?: Why Women Really Quit Careers and Head Home

The company will provide $250 and an allowance for high-speed Internet service to allow employees to work from homes. The workers will be performing a similar service as they did when working within the normal office environment. Assignments will include making reservations for hotels in the chain and performing other customer service tasks.

When There Are Drawbacks To Working From Home

Mommy Millionaire: How I Turned My Kitchen Table Idea into a Million Dollars and How You Can, Too!

When people who work geographically apart need to meet, the lack of interaction can mean that something is lost in the translation. The inability to read body language or follow what’s being sketched out on a whiteboard can result in misunderstandings and lost productivity.

According to Jack Penkoske, director for manpower, personnel and security at the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), staff had to be trained to know when they should be on-site for meetings and when phone conferencing would work. If it’s a standard type of meeting — where it’s a status report thing, where you’re updating on things — they’re very conducive to that e-collaboration type of setup.

If it’s a strategy discussion or you’re getting into a lot more dialogue on issues and concerns and brainstorming, sometimes you might find that you go back to wanting to have face-to-face meetings for those.

But then, in our opinion, that’s an advantage of working from home or telecommuting to work. Preparation for the meeting can be done in the quiet of your own home office. Productivity increases without the constant interruptions of working in an environment where office mates are forced to share inadequate space.

Bloggers needed for new site on technology for small business

The California Small Business Association is looking for someone who has a passion for both small businesses and technology to write a blog on technology for small businesses.

We are starting a website devoted to helping small business owners improve the way they purchase and use technology. The website will have several tools such as buying guides, original content, and listings of service providers, and one of the most important elements of the site will be a blog.

There are many blogs on technology for small businesses, and most of them are mediocre. They have no attitude, no strong human voice. They blog about technology in general instead of focusing ruthlessly on the needs of small businesses. They are afraid to take sides, name names, and be controversial. They aren?t really blogs but standard product reviews. Their posts have few comments because they are so bland.

We want to help small business owners become more comfortable with technology by viewing it through the filter of a unique human perspective. Our blog is not for people already proficient in technology but for small business owners who are forced to be their own part-time IT manager. Other parts of the site will help them gain the technical knowledge they need or to find professional help quickly. What we want the blog to do is put it all together ? not only inform our users, but entertain and provoke them, help them get in touch with their inner nerd. We want this to be the Car Talk of technology blogs.

Your samples don?t need to be published, since we believe that you could come from either the world of writing or the world of technology. We?ll be rating your samples by the following criteria:
? passion for small businesses
? passion for technology
? breadth of knowledge about small businesses
? depth of knowledge about small businesses
? breadth of knowledge about technology
? depth of knowledge about technology
? the ability to write about technical subjects for general audiences
? an understanding of what blogs are good for and what they?re not good for
? a sense of humor
? clear, professional, journalistic writing style

Compensation will be $75 per post, with a maximum of 10 posts per month.

To apply, send a letter and samples to writer at csba.com.

About the CSBA
The California Small Business Association is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization that gives small businesses a voice in state and federal governments. How Changing Generational Attitudes Will Result In Profound Economic Effects

The Leisure Economy: How Changing Demographics, Economics, and Generational Attitudes Will Reshape Our Lives and Our Industries

As the millions of baby boomers retire, the United States economy will make a move focusing on leisure, according to writer and economist Linda Nazareth. Nazareth is the author of “The Leisure Economy,” a book about how changing demographics, economics, and generational attitudes will reshape lives and industries.

The Leisure Economy offers a provocative and insightful look at the coming sea change in the North American economy. As this exodus away from full-time employment, the U.S. and Canadian economies will be flooded with people who literally have time on their hands.

And in the workforce, the boomers will be replaced by generations with very different attitudes from the boomers. Gen X and Gen Y understand the worth of leisure time-and when they’re in charge, they just might demand some.

The shift away from an intense focus on work towards leisure will make for some profound shocks to our lives, industries and institutions. Lost in the day-to-day frenzy of the time-crunch economy, many have yet to consider what lies ahead and what these changes really mean.

For businesses, the shock will be the rudest, but whether you are an investor, a consumer, a business owner or a worker, you need to stay ahead of the curve. Read more »
