Every once in a while, I receive an email contact from an individual asking how to become a freelancer. Unfortunately, because I spend most of my waking hours making a (freelance) living, my response is something less complete.
Freelancing, working from home, or home-based employment is a huge step for an individual accustomed to working a nine-to-five job for an employer. I urge those wanting to join the ranks of freelancers to plan well ahead before making the leap. You just can’t quit your current job and begin working on your own. The prospects of failure exist if you fail to establish a small client base before quitting your present employment.
I started my freelance writing career — blogging, web design and such by using my free evenings and weekends to work on side projects, not just for paying clients, but on things I liked doing. All the while learning web promotion techniques, I continued to experiment and share my findings with others through bulletin board and forum conversations. Eventually, I found that clients would seek me out, to avail themselves of my newly-acquired skills.
