“Working for the man” could be easier, and saving our planet a beneficial byproduct, if only more of us could telecommute, even for only a few days each month. Combining the need of flexibility for businesses and workers with the need to reduce CO2 emissions while telecommuting offers a viable solution for many corporate and small business environments.

The goals of any telecommuting arrangement must be to increase the flexibility and cost savings that come from a mobile workforce without imposing restrictions or compromising security. Then, it is up to us to

• document our telecommuting projects,
• keep a journal of time saved by telecommuting,
• make a record of our personal savings from telecommuting,
• log telephone conversations made from any location other than our office or cubicle,
• note how the information technology department is helping us to become more mobile.

Once we have spent a few months telecommuting, only then can we provide management with the facts to support a continuance of our telecommuting assignments.
